Making our services accessible and inclusive

Focal Point are constantly looking at ways to make our programmes, workshops and coaching as inclusive as possible. To do this, we have made the following changes:

Programmes and workshops

Our workshop design has always been based on the key principles of catering to different learning styles and to build on this we have recently audited our whole offering through an accessibility and neuro-inclusion lens. This has included pre programme communication, support in set up of programmes and follow up, as well as the sessions themselves

Key changes we have made:

  • Much more up front information for participants about what to expect from our workshops in terms of delivery style and types of exercises used, to take some of the “unknown” out of the participation
  • Reassurance that no one will ever be put “on the spot” and that there will be time built in for self reflection
  • Flexibility to see programme content in advance of a session where that is helpful
  • All content run through an accessibility checker for example to ensure we have alt text on images, accessible fonts and font sizes, colour and contrast are appropriate

Designing for cognitive diversity makes our offering more accessible to everyone, not just neurodivergent participants, so everyone benefits.

Website

To provide additional support to aid a more inclusive user experience we now also provide the Recite Me assistive technology tool on our website. This Toolbar enables all website visitors to customise their experience through a range of options to suit their online accessibility and language needs.

The Recite Me toolbar provides text-to-speech functionality, fully customisable styling features, reading aids and a translation tool with over 100 languages, including 65 text-to-speech voices and many other features.

This means that when the toolbar is activated by the user they can:

  • Listen to the website using text-to-speech functionality
  • Customise background, text and accessibility tool colours
  • Modify the font, line height or spacing of text
  • Zoom in up to 200% without text spilling off the screen
  • The text will reflow in a single column when you change the size of your browser window
  • Navigate the website using just a keyboard
  • Translate the website into a different language
  • Download mp3 files of web page text
  • View website pages in text-only mode

Do have a look while you are on the website to see the difference it can make to the user’s experience.
